Fergus Friday

I have decided to add a new feature to my blog. I am calling it Fergus Friday. It is hard to resist filling my blog with pictures and stories about Fergus, so I thought I would limit myself to the occasional Friday post.

Fergus is now 3 1/2 months old, and has he ever grown! This is most noticeable when you look at his ears. Adult West Highland Terrier ears stand straight up. The transition from floppy puppy ears to grown-up ears is both slow and hilarious.

Now that both of his ears are up the next step is for him to grow into them. From the front he looks like a rabbit.

The back view is closer to Yoda.

He is slowly morphing from a roly-poly puppy into a traditional Westie. I consider it a "cute for handsome" exchange.

Mischievous would be the one word I would use to describe Fergus at this stage. Turning my back on him for even a few minutes can result in scenes like this.

Or this.

By the way, this puppy has settled the age-old question about why dogs love to chew on shoes. It turns out to have nothing whatsoever to do with liking the shape or taste of the shoe. It is all about the smell. How do I know this? Simple. He totally ignores the shoe that goes on David's scent-free prosthetic foot. When Fergus grabs one of David's shoes it is always the left one. The one David wears on his real leg - the leg with the real, smelly guy foot attached.

  1. He is adorable! Totally brings back memories of Finnegan's huge ears and jumping on the dishwasher. Does Fergus like the highest part of the couch too?

    1. That's funny that Finnegan liked jumping on the dishwasher too! Fergus can't quite jump up on the couch yet. Jenny can though, and she will do it just to drive Fergus crazy.

  2. I LOVE this new feature! I literally busted-out laughing at my desk when I scrolled down to the picture of Fergus in the dishwasher! He looks like he is constantly entertaining!

    1. He is definitely entertaining. Whenever he gets into trouble I keep telling him it's a good thing he is so cute. :-)

  3. Somehow, I think he'll always be cute....which will enable him to get away with all sorts of things.

I remember we agreed that cats belong outside, but don't remember if that applied to dogs too. I'm still not used to having Bandit in the house, even though we've had him for years.

I wonder what Westies were originally breed to do?? The hair in the eyes seems like it's there to protect them. Maybe while he digs for prey?

    1. I don't think the outside rule applies to dogs. Neither does Fergus. :-)

They were bred to kill small animals. That hair in his eyes drives me crazy. I even bought baby nail scissors to try and clip it, but Fergus was not cooperative. I think he mistook the scissors for one of the small animals he was bred to kill. :-)

  5. Kristie,

He is so cute. Your observation is interesting and confirming especially about shoes dogs go after. There is always something each of us discover because of our unique situation. Everything counts. You're a daily life journalist.

  6. So wonderful to see a puppy's progress! My three are 5, 7, and almost 8. I miss the ears:)

  7. I am jealous that you have three! It must be a lively house! Do they all get along?

  8. Aw Fergus is utterly adorable. I stumbled upon your blog after reading my friend Jaz's post about your blog. Westies are my all time fav dog and one day i hope to have one. But I cannot afford one atm and my flat is tiny so would be cruel to keep a small dog cooped up. I look forward to seeing more of Fergus on a Friday...he has just brightend up my day :)

    1. Welcome to my blog! I hope you are able to get a Westie sometime soon. They are so much fun! I can't promise there will be a Fergus post every Friday, but I hope to get up at least two a month. It shouldn't be too difficult to do if he continues to be this entertaining. :-)

    1. It is funny you would say that, because I would say the same thing about myself. I am not really a pet person (in spite of the multitude of pets my kids have had over the years!). But there is something about this puppy that is irresistible. :-)

    1. Puppies are cute, but there is a part of me that is looking forward for him to be fully grown and able to go out on walks with me. And to be house trained!

  11. Wanna trade handspun yarn for Fergie?

    1. Ha! I love yarn, but I am not even tempted. Thanks for the offer though! :-)

  12. "Cute for handsome exchange" indeed. He really does look like Yoda from behind though. I laughed when I saw him in the dishwasher because I often have to grab our youngest cat out of there too. (Along with any cupboard that is open for more than 5 seconds....)
