The World's Cutest Hat and a Party

This weekend we celebrated Jay's birthday. This wasn't just a run-of-the-mill birthday. It was one that ended in a 0 and, on a scale of 1 to 10, started with an alarmingly high number.

Lucy not only has aunts and uncles running out her ears, she also has quite a collection of great aunts and uncles as well. Jay's birthday was a chance for her to meet some of them.

Great Aunt Lynn (Jay's sister)

Great Aunt Maureen (Jay's sister)
Great Uncle Robert (Maureen's husband),who appears to have a talent for getting Lucy to blow bubbles!

There was, of course, cake. I had some of the gluten-free coconut cake leftover from the night before. This cake is the best. And I don't mean just the best gluten-free cake ever, I mean The Best Cake Ever. The recipe can be found here, and I use this frosting recipe.

I'm sure the rest of our family would take exception to me saying my coconut cake was better than the traditional Hammond birthday cake I served everyone else, which is this oatmeal one I blogged about three years ago. If you haven't made this cake yet I'm not sure what you are waiting for. I guarantee it will be love at first bite.

Here's the birthday guy, who was somewhat upstaged by his granddaughter. Not that he minded.

Lucy and Uncle Kellen are still trying to figure each other out. I'm not sure who looks more perplexed.

Aunt Anita helped Lucy model her new hat.

I don't want to sound boastful, but seriously, I think this hat/baby combo is the cutest thing ever. I have knit another one of these hats for a friend's baby, and it is every bit as adorable on him. Better yet, the feedback I have is that the hat actually fits, stays on the baby's head, and is worn often. I'm hoping this will keep Lucy's ears warm all winter long.

Of course, there was lots of Lucy snuggling time with Grandma, too.

I must say, I might be a grandmother, but I'm quite certain I'm too young to be married to someone who is now 60 years old. Just saying...

  1. I know how you feel. My husband will be 60 next year. How can that be? Looks like you had a wonderful family gathering. I agree with you ... That has to be a seriously cute hat, modelled by a very cute baby x

My husband turns 60 next year also...I always tease him that no matter how old we both get, I'll never quite catch up to him. On the other hand, I feel that it's not quite fair that he's had more birthdays (read cake, gifts) than I have! I have to agree that Lucy's hat is quite wonderful - and how clever of grandma to be so colour-coordinated in that picture!

  4. Belated birthday wishes to Jay, it looks as if you have a wonderful day with all the family. Your cake looks delicious. Lucy seems to have grown such a lot and she makes a wonderful model for your knitting how can you not smile looking at all those pictures of her wearing her hat. What a poppet.

  8. Happy belated b-day to Jay! You two look like pretty young grandparents. I think my favorite shot of Lucy is the one with Anita. The hat is adorable (of course), but her eyes are focused on something to the side and she appears to be planning something.

I think this set of comments gets the award for outing the ages of the most husbands ever. :)

  9. Lucy is so adorable!!! How can you resist biting those little cheeks all the time? I'm not sure I could. And I do love that hat, a whole lot. (And I am married to someone who is 63, which does freak me out on occasion but of course I'd never tell him that.) What a happy celebration it must have been!

  10. OK, Lucy with Kellen is my favourite Lucy expression, although the montage of hat photos is a close second. And love that you and Lucy were colour coordinated ;-) Happy Birthday to Jay, looks like a wonderful family celebration!

  11. Well Grandma, you look pretty young, and what an adorable little Lucy in her knitted hat. Priceless! I'll get on the bandwagon and admit to being married to someone who turned 64 the other week. Amused myself singing When I'm 64 to him all day - he he

  14. I have to confess to being with one who will be 62 next birthday, I am thankfully still a few years off the 60. As for the granddaughter she is growing into a real little beauty, and looks very happy to be passed around

  15. Belated happy birthday greetings to Jay. It looked like a fabulous family get together and I loved Lucy's hat, very cute. The cake looks divine and I went into the link for the frosting which I've made a note of. It would be great on my carrot cake.

  16. What a sweetheart Lucy is (along with all the other wonderful descriptions everyone else wrote)! We will be grandparents for the first time next Spring--we are 67 and 63 so it's been a long-time coming. Love Fergus, too. My Westie is named Gabriel--such a wonderful breed. And I see you are a published children's book author! One of my aspirations as well. How did you accomplish getting a publisher?

  18. Belated birthday greetings to Jay. Pah, he's younger than me, so he's still young. :-) As for Lucy, she's totally adorable, especially in that hat. She is obviously the apple of the entire family's eye. :-)

  19. What a great post, Happy Birthday to your 60 year old! And that darling Lucy would look cute with a paper bag on her head, but I love the hat you made her.

  20. I laugh every time I look at those pictures of that precious little face peeking out from her new hat! What a little cutie.

I'm belatedly celebrating your husband's birthday. I was hungry for something sweet last night when I read your blog, so I baked the oatmeal cake. Didn't have any quick oats on hand, so I just used old fashioned oats and cooked them in the microwave according to package directions and added the butter at the end. That worked out perfectly. For the icing, I took liberties, since I would rather chew off my arm than eat coconut. I made a glazing of melted butter, brown sugar, milk (I didn't have any evaporated milk), and chopped pecans. Poured that over the still-warm cake, and stuck it under the broiler for two minutes. The results were great. I can see why your family likes this cake so much. I will be celebrating your husband's birthday for the rest of the week!

  25. Lucy looks as adorable as ever, and especially adorable in that hat! And no you can't possibly be old enough to be married to Jay. Ted is a year younger than Jay and a lot older than me ... I'm sure I'll be feeling the same way next year!
